Will:

Great post on how ownership of a name/identity can change, either through a conscious effort (ie. William to Will) or a situation out of your control (FreeYourId being sold, and the new company not providing the service you want --either for the price or services offered).

I think that approach to identity should be the, "Google Commodity Server" approach. Where it is known that Google uses commodity servers in production, which are expected to fail. So processes have been put into place to deal with something that is "expected" to happen, a failure in something, anything.

In a way all public-facing identifiers should be expected to recycle, or "go away," in identifying a particular person or thing. It's sad to say but even http://[www.]facebook.com/nika.jones (which should be me, but I didn't act quick enough smile) will go away someday. It may take 60 years or so, but there is a day when it will need to eventually hit the recycle bin.

Great article Will. In the early days of OpenID I preached long and hard about the reassignable identifier problem (which the OpenID community generally calls the recyclable identifier problem). But folks were not too worried about it -- the general attitude was, "We'll solve it when we get there."

As your article describes, if you wait until you get there, it's too late ;-)

Here's hoping the next generation of OpenID (the rumored OpenID v.next) gets non-recyclable identifier right.

Wow, that was fast! :)

I wasn't the only one, so I hardly deserve the credit. Too bad Krishnan's blog is dead.

P.S. I love the current OpenID plugin UI!

@Dmitry: heh, I actually intended to include a link to your post for exactly that reason... because you did warn people about that. Unfortunately, the wayback machine was having trouble yesterday and wouldn't load the page, so I left it out.

I hate to say "I told you so", but I blogged about FreeYourID just a day after you did, though much less favorably.

My old blog is now gone along with the domain name (oh the irony!), but thanks to the Wayback Machine, the post (complete with some witty comments from GNR and JanRain) is still here:

Identity IS important. Don't entrust it with the wrong people.

XRIs had already proven that (i.e. my i-name is =willnorris)... it's just had trouble catching on. And EAUT is effectively dead, in name only though, not in the concept. See webfinger.info.

I find it curious with the various systems of naming user@system system.com/user etc. that twitter has shown a single word can be enough space to provide names for the planet. 6 chars with a-z are 308 million names, 8 chars are 208 billion names.

i am glad to have a vanity domain for myself and with openid delegation i know the identifier will outlast any one provider. at the same time, it appears the email address has beaten the URL as identifier (Facebook, Digg, etc). OpenID's adoption of EAUT will be important.
